Damn right, you do! Bass is fun!
I don't have anything to sell, but based on your budget and the tone you are going for, I might be able to make some recommendations.

My first recommendation is to join up at http://www.leftybassist.com You will get a ton of great advice there. Being in Massachusetts, you will definitely want to talk to paulo, tim and screambasses. They are great guys who will be glad to help you out.

    Later!

Mexican J bass, or a mid range Ibanez sound gear will serve you well

Don't make the mistake I made of getting a BC Rich Warlock bass like I did many years ago... it's a piece of crap.

I would go with a Fender Jazz over just about anything, but I love the jazz bass sound.

Oh, and I would not go with a P-bass because you can get pretty close to a P-bass sound by using the neck pickup on the jazz, but you can't get anything like the jazz bass sound out of a P-bass.

I think my Jazz bass is overall superior to the soundgear, but I love the body/neck of the soundgear line. Fender Mexico stuff is great quality for the price.

But they (G/C) have a 30 day return policy on used gear ... you risk the shippiing costs, but can return to your local store
